Online Casino News: Betfair Blocked from France
by Joanne R Tuesday October 13, 2009  at 9:33 PM

The European Commission is expecting to hear from the online casino Betfair as they feel that they are being discriminated against by the new laws that France is passing regarding online casino gambling. They say that the French government has passed the law simply to keep out online casinos of their nature which is discriminatory and they plan on fighting it.

France has been making great strides in attempting to open their online casino gambling market to foreign competition. However, just as a new law making this happen gets ready to pass, the country adds on a new amendment that blocks Betfair and the other sports betting sites from participating.

The new amendment says that bookmakers must be licensed by the state, they must pay a percentage of the wins to the sports, and they must not allow their players to lay bets as well as place them. However Betfair allows their players to bet against each other which goes against that requirement. What is interesting about this is that they are easily one of the world’s largest sports betting services and this would keep them from legally entering the French market.

They are planning on filing a complaint with the European Union but depending on how it is viewed they may not have a leg to stand on. Under European Union rules discrimination against competition can be legally set up if the country can make a good case for doing so. If they can prove that public safety is involved then the amendment will be allowed to proceed.
