March 31, 2009 Online Casino News:
Online Casino Block Backlash
The country of Sweden is in an uproar
over the internet and where their
boundaries should be. The Swedish
Government has announced that they are
considering an online casino block and
the online casino industry is up in arms
about it, as are many other people.
Their government has stated that they
are considering implementing a software
system that would filter out those sites
that are online casinos and block
residents from participating at them.
The plan is to try and get rid of
foreign online casino sites, and the
government would decide which ones
stayed and which ones went. They would
then notify providers of which online
casinos were no longer allowed, and
which ones could remain. However, the
backlash has been that opponents are
calling it the first step towards
censorship and that the government has
no place deciding this for their
residents.
At this point the government has simply
made the announcement of what they are
considering, and have asked for public
feedback before they implement it. The
feedback was quick and severe with those
opposed saying that the government
should not have any control over which
sites can be viewed by residents.
According to the Swedish Post and
Telecom Agency – which is part of the
government – if online gambling is
legal, why would online casinos be
banned? They said that this was akin to
free speech and that it should not be
allowed. The Justices of the High Courts
said that as there are no other similar
laws against other legal activities,
this seems like the first step toward
banning all sorts of things that the
government may not like.
