March 24, 2009 Online Casino News:
Online Gambling Addiction Not a
Problem
It would seem that there are new
conflicting reports as to the damage
that online casino gambling can do on a
person’s psyche. There have been reports
over the past few years that suggest
that online casino gambling legalization
would simply lead to an increase in
gambling addiction, but it would appear
that this latest report is contradicting
those stories.
Some say that the online casino gambling
addiction increase myth was simply put
out there to gain support for the
passage of the Unlawful Internet
Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA. They
say that there is a need to justify the
passage of the online casino gambling
ban and this would enable them to do so
if people felt like they were protecting
them. But if that information is not
true, which it would appear that it
isn’t – then it would be more of an
issue of conservatives just not wanting
to see online gambling legalized.
This propaganda has long stood for the
reason the UIGEA was passed – and many
thought that if online gambling was
legal there would be a large increase in
addiction. Quite frankly, it does make
sense that if you make something more
accessible then people are going to take
advantage of it.
However, according to Howard Slayton, a
compulsive gambling expert, the reason
that so many people become addicted to
gambling in the land based casinos is
because they lose their sense of
reality. The customer becomes
“enveloped” in the environment that the
casino creates – leaving them unsure of
time and reality. Online casino gambling
however creates no such scenario and
thus they are always deeply rooted in
their own reality.
