June 10, 2009 Online Casino News:
Minnesota Changes Mind
The state of Minnesota has rescinded
their order to the state’s Internet
Service Providers or ISPs telling them
to block all online casino activity. The
state was inundated with calls and
letters from both residents and the
online casino industry telling them that
they were against the move, and one has
to believe that this compiled with the
iMEGA lawsuit was probably enough to
change their mind.
The Minnesota Department of Public
Safety issued a new letter stating that
they were withdrawing their command for
the ISPs to block the online casinos.
Not only were they under fire for the
move from iMEGA, who filed suit claiming
that the order was unconstitutional and
without jurisdiction, but the ISPs
themselves chose to ignore the order.
Their lawyers told them that they were
not responsible for what people viewed
over the internet and that the court was
going to throw out the case.
State Rep. Pat Garofalo introduced
legislation that said that the DPS
should not be able to move forward with
the legislation saying that the
“Department of Public Safety has to have
better things to do with their time." In
response, the DPS said that they have
not given up yet, and that although they
have changed tactics – they are going to
proceed with their goal of making online
casino gambling illegal. They say that
they are concerned with the well being
of their residents and are not going to
give up.
John Willems said that he didn’t know if
iMEGA would have prevailed in court, but
many said that they felt that the reason
they pulled the order is precisely
because they were sure that it would
have failed.
