June 6, 2009 Online Casino News: Bachus
Speaks Out
The
online casino industry has waited a long
time for steps to be taken that might
actually add to the demise of the
Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement
Act or UIGEA. The UIGEA essentially made
online casino gambling difficult at best
because it made the processing of
payments to and from online casinos
illegal. It did not however make online
casino gambling illegal, although many
think that it did.
Something else it did not do was to stop
people from participating in online
casino gambling. People still
participate, and some experts say that
the numbers have increased as much as
they have because the government told
them they couldn’t anymore. After all,
the quickest way to get someone to do
something you want is to tell them they
can’t!
When the UIGEA was passed, studies were
cited that said that these steps were
being taken to protect children from
underage gambling and to help online
casino gambling addicts. However, this
bill actually did neither of those
things. Recent studies have shown that
online casino gambling does not lead to
gambling addiction, that it comes from
the land based casinos instead. Those
few online gambling addicts that they
found were actually originally land
based gamblers.
However, this does not stop some
legislators from speaking out about
something they don’t seem to know much
about. Rep. Spencer Bachus, the author
of the UIGEA is now coming out claiming
that if the UIGEA is overturned children
will become addicted to online gambling.
However, Rep. Barney Frank’s bill has a
provision in it to prevent underage
gambling.
