Online Casino News: Who’s Going
to Pay?
by Joanne R Friday July 31, 2009

When we first heard about the fight
between the online casinos and several
religious groups over who was going to
pay taxes, we figured it was the same
old song. But then we realized that it
wasn’t a case of them not wanting to pay
them, they were fighting over who should
pay them with the online casino industry
saying that they wanted to.
The fight started with a Minnesota
preacher by the name of Reverend Gus
Booth of Warroad Community Church. He
has donated a significant amount of time
and money to the campaign for John
McCain as well as preaching against
online casinos. He makes it very clear
on a weekly basis that he is for keeping
the online casino industry illegal.
This however caught the eye of the
Internal Revenue Service as there is a
law that states that non-profit,
tax-exempt groups cannot practice
political advocacy. They then suspended
the investigation. But Booth is upset
because he wants to be investigated
because he wants the tax laws changed so
that he can do what he wants. However,
the online casino community has a
problem with that.
They say that they want to pay taxes to
the government and make the industry
legal. The online casino industry argues
that if Booth is allowed to keep making
speeches against them then he should
have to pay taxes for it is illegal for
churches to campaign against online
gambling. They say that these groups
such as Focus on the Family need to
start paying taxes or they need to keep
their mouths shut.
