July 8, 2009 Online Casino News: Gambling Debate Delay
The online casino community wants the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act overturned. This is not really a surprise. However, they are also aware that there are things that are more pressing at this time – like the state of the economic condition of the country – that may take precedence over whether or not online casinos are legal or not.
But they say that those ideas are not mutually exclusive. They know that the biggest problem that we are facing right now is the fact that the economy is terrible, but by legalizing the online casino industry, there is the fact that it can help the economy and at the same time make a lot of people happy. The money that would come from regulation and legalization of the online casino industry would be in the billions – definitely something work looking into.
But right now it looks as though the online casino issue has been tabled and may not have a chance to be heard until September at the earliest. One of the biggest problems is that the industry’s biggest ally in the fight to make online casinos legal is Rep. Barney Frank – who is also head of the US House Financial Services Committee. But he is in the middle of dealing with the crisis of the economy, leaving them with a shortage of time to deal with the other.
There are many online casinos that have been working to get back into the US online casino industry – but now all of that is going to have to wait until they can get a better idea of what they are looking at time wise. Right now with September at the earliest for discussion, it could be a long time off.
