Antigua Demands Justice
When the United States passed the
Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement
Act or UIGEA, they cut off the funding
for the tiny country of Antigua. The
island makes the majority of their
income off of online casino gambling, so
losing the large chunk of customers that
the US brought to them had them losing
millions of dollars in online casino
gambling revenue. This led them to ask
the US to reverse the UIGEA, which of
course they did not. They then had to
take their case to the World Trade
Organization or WTO who ordered the US
to either remove all online gambling
within their borders or reverse the act.
Of course the US did neither, but did
agree to enter into talks with Antigua
to come to some kind of settlement.
Antigua agreed as well, and ever since
then the US has been dragging their feet
and not honoring the terms of the deal.
Mark Mendel is the lead attorney for
Antigua in their online casino gambling
case against the United States. He says
that the US is perpetrating “Economic
Warfare” on the tiny country, and that
in part they did it because they thought
that they were invincible. However, they
are not. The settlement is way overdue
to the country, who has been suffering
horribly financially since the UIGEA was
passed.
Mendel says that they will continue to
play fair on their end with the
negotiations, until they have “exhausted
all options.” He says that perhaps a
compromise of some sort might be in
order.
