Utah Wants States to Decide
Online Casino Fate
Of all places to come out in
support of online casinos, Utah
has to be the strangest. When
people think Utah they think
anti gambling and anti fun, as
well as a bunch of people
looking to tell the world what
they should and should not do.
However, nothing could be
further from the truth.
Utah citizens are probably as
shocked as anyone as their
government announces that it
should be up to the states as to
whether or not online casinos
are legal. They say that they
want the right of
self-determinations, and they
think that not only should the
UIGEA be repealed but that
states should decide on an
individual basis as to what they
will allow or not.
However, Utah lawmakers admit
that they don’t want to see
online gambling legalized in
their state, they want the
online casinos to stay away.
They say that legalizing online
casinos in the state of Utah
would be a detriment to all. But
they also know that the
Constitution says that the
states should decide for
themselves. Their state
Representative Sheryl Allen is
anti online casino, but supports
the ability for the states to
make it illegal if they want to.
Lawmakers in Utah fear that if
the US government legalizes and
regulates the online casino
industry that they will be
forced to allow online casinos
to operate in their state. They
say that if the US makes pacts
with other countries to allow
it, this may just happen – and
this is not what they want as a
state. However, if the states
have the right to determine the
fate of online casino gambling,
then they can keep it out and
everyone else can do whatever
they want.
