April 24, 2009 Online Casino News:
US Trying to Block Facts
The United States Department of Justice
is trying to keep out facts that they
say are not pertinent to the case that
they are currently fighting in court
against iMEGA. The US DOJ is aware that
if new facts pertaining to their case
are allowed into court that their case
will be much harder for them to win. The
DOJ is fighting to support the Unlawful
Internet Gambling Enforcement Act or
UIGEA and they maintain that the
regulations that they put forth are not
a nuisance.
The online casino ban that was put into
place in 2006 is responsible for the
problems that some states are having
with their lotteries. Because the ban
says that banks and financial
institutions are responsible for
blocking all online casino transactions,
the banks are finding themselves in the
position of blocking transactions that
are not necessarily illegal.
Online lottery sales are coming up as
online casino transactions and the banks
are blocking them. However, this goes
against the statement that the
government is making that there is
nothing wrong with the online casino ban
and the way that the regulations have
been handled. Now they are trying to
keep the information regarding the
lotteries quiet so they don’t have to
admit it in court.
Their argument is that the
irregularities did not exist two years
ago when the case was first brought to
the courts. However, iMEGA says that it
shows the impact that the online casino
ban regulations have had on the
industry. They say that this is simply a
foreshadowing of what has yet to come
with the online casino ban. They say
that the DOJ is arguing against it
because they see how “germane” it really
is to the case and how it will hurt them
immensely.
