April 28, 2009 Online Casino News:
Online Casinos and Residents
Not Really Listening
It is funny, or maybe not, how little
the online casino industry listens to
their elected officials in Australia.
The country’s federal government has
made it very clear that online casino
gambling is to be limited in the amount
that can be spent, but the online
casinos are not following the rules set
forth by their governmental officials.
The government has told the online
casino industry that they are not
allowed to take bets from residents, but
they are continuing to take more than
$300 million in bets from Australians
each year. The government has told them
that they are breaking the law, and
there are fines of up to $1.1 million a
day for breaking the law. This has not
acted as the deterrent that they were
hoping for.
Big name online casinos such as
PokerStars and Full Tilt are continuing
to flout their refusal to follow the
laws, much to the chagrin of the
government. They advertise to
Australians, and they are not alone in
that many of these larger online casino
companies are doing it as well.
According to the Council of Australian
Governments it is costing the
commonwealth significant tax revenue and
leaving their residents unprotected out
there.
Most of it comes from online casinos
that offer poker, as poker is hugely
popular in the country. But their
biggest concern is that this is a non
regulated industry and that their
residents have no protection when it
comes to fraud. They urge their
residents to not participate at these
online casinos and they say that if they
do not listen and something happens they
will have no recourse in which to help
them. They are concerned that this can
only end badly for their residents, but
the online casino industry says that the
laws that the country has are archaic
and that they should allow their
residents to gamble.
