April 15, 2009 Online Casino News:
EU Has a Problem with the US
Online Casino Ban
Anyone following the turmoil that
surrounds the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act, or UIGEA, will not be
surprised by the recent announcement by
the European Union regarding our status
in the online casino gambling world. The
EU has long had a problem with our
stance on online casino gambling and has
pressured the US to reverse the ban as
they said that it is in violation of
World Trade Organization standards.
However, thus far they have not come out
officially with their results of the
investigation that they had been
running.
Now they have and the results are fairly
damning, but not of any surprise to
anyone really. They say that we are in
violation of the WTO standards because
we are blocking and prosecuting overseas
online casino gambling companies. The
report says that by allowing domestic
online gambling such as horse racing and
lotteries we are discriminating against
our international competitors – which is
in direct violation of treaties that we
have signed.
They say that not only do we not allow
US citizens to not participate at these
online casinos that are located outside
the US, but that our Department of
Justice attempts to persecute anyone who
still allows US players to visit them.
Congress says that they knew the report
was imminent, but the Bush
Administration ignored all of the
warnings that this was coming – knowing
full well that we would be in trouble
for our policies.
The real question is where do we go from
here? With a new administration can we
reverse the damage that has already been
done to the online casino industry? The
EU says that they will attempt to
negotiate a settlement with the US
before they go and file a formal charge
with the WTO and many say that President
Obama will be open to these talks and
putting this entire online casino
gambling mess behind us.
