April 12, 2009 Online Casino News:
Online Casino Ads Barred
The Advertising Standards Authority, or
ASA, has allegedly started blocking ads
from the online casino industry. The ASA
has taken the recommendations that were
put in place earlier, and adjusted them
so that they are now blocking online
casino gambling ads in addition to other
ads that should be blocked. Needless to
say, the online casino industry is
reeling and is very upset.
Lawmakers in the United Kingdom had
agreed to allow advertising for online
casino gambling. However, when agreeing
to it, they had set up standards with a
very literal interpretation in order to
keep those online casino gambling sites
from luring in children. They wanted to
protect those that had already
established a pattern of online casino
gambling abuse, and they wanted to
protect children from sites that might
be construed as family friendly instead
of the gambling sites that they were.
But the ASA took those interpretations
and has started banning online casino
ads that should not have been banned
according to experts. Tombola Bingo is
an online casino bingo site, and is has
a theme of a fairground on the site.
However, the ASA received one complaint
against the online casino site and they
banned them from advertising. Tombola
says that they actually met with
governmental officials before they
created the commercial and they were
told that they were fine – and that they
were following the letter of the
guidelines.
However, the ASA found that the online
casino site was too attractive to
children and that the ad was in
violation. Experts say according to
these standards, they are going to find
almost all online casino ads to be in
violation of the law. The online casino
sites have to make their games look like
fun, so that they can bring in clients –
that is the point of advertising after
all.
