NFL Changing Its Tune on Betting

Friday, August 13th, 2010

It is no secret that the US is in the midst of changes to the gambling market. if you look at the rise in online gambling’s popularity throughout the states, you are going to find millions of players who are now engaging in various online games. This includes poker, slots, video slots, backgammon, baccarat, roulette and bingo. Whatever game you play in a land-based casino you are going to find online these days. Due to that huge rise in popularity, many legislators have their eyes on the huge dollars available. Barney Frank has been instrumental in the US trying to rewrite laws and bills that would replace the UIGEA, or Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. This law has been used to deny online gambling’s legality for the past four years but has proven to be ineffective to handle the public interest in gambling online.

Frank has taken it upon himself to focus on the issue. He created a proposal to amend the UIGEA and legalize and regulate gambling in the states. In particular he is hoping that the new law will sort out the NFLs former denial of allowing sports betting into the league. The amendment is called HR2267. This is an amendment that prohibits organizations that are licensed under the proposal from engaging in sports betting. The only exception is horse racing. The NFLs VP Brian McCarthy said that the organization does not directly oppose the HR2267 amendment because its lingo has been altered a bit. The amendment has been altered to cater to former hang-ups that opposing companies and organizations had.

For the past few years the NFL has stood strong against sports betting and wagering in general due to the influence it had over the sport. Organizers believed that if sports betting was legalized it would cause players to act dishonestly within the sport and sully its good name. Though there still may be growing pains to overcome, many believe that this first move to amend the UIGEA is a great start for change. They are hoping that this is the beginning of a new era of legalized and regulated gambling within the US and the world of gambling.

Sports Betting Finds New Popularity

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Sports betting has grown in the past few years, much like overall gambling has in the online world. For a long time all types of gambling were considered to be underground activities. They were looked at as activities done by mobsters, high-rollers or Las Vegas entertainers. Overall gambling was not something that was accepted by the general public. In particular slots betting was something that was looked down upon and sporting teams throughout the country. Owners in the past have seen sports gambling as something they didn’t want to get involved in. They believed it had a “bad reputation” and affiliated it with the underground of society. Now, things are changing quickly.

For the first time sports teams are seeking out gambling sponsors. In fact, the NFL recently made moves to include a high-priced sponsorship deal with an online casino. Though it was merely another business deal, it made a huge change in the market. For the first time sports teams are thinking of using gambling sponsors to fuel their promotional campaigns.
All eyes are on the coupling of the first sports team of the NFL and the gambling sponsor. Insiders want to see how lucrative the deal is and how well it works. Most likely it is going to be a premiere deal and other companies are already gearing up to join in the same type of strategic alliance. Now the MLB, NBA, NCAAB, MHL, NFL and the NCAAF are all looking for their own opportunities to market via sponsorship to online gambling websites. The reality is that online casinos are big business these days and they are also bringing in billions of dollars. Casinos are a light at the end of the financial tunnel when it comes to finding the money companies need to overcome difficult budgets and deficits.

If you are a fan of sporting events expect more affiliate partnerships and the inclusion of big-name online casinos. It is a time when the hobby is now growing into a viable option for corporate sponsorship and mainstream acceptance. That’s great news for fans of teams. It means that as the year moves on they will gain more notoriety and have bigger budgets for bigger promotions and shows to enjoy.

World Cup Proves a Blessing for Bookmakers

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Fans of the World Cup proved faithful this past year. Now sports bookers are producing numbers proving that the World Cup was great for business. One of the things about the World Cup was that advertisers and marketers of the event were working hard to promote it. Not that the World Cup is without a premiere reputation for soccer fun, but marketers were working overtime to bring a new notoriety to the games. In addition to the regular promotions, the operators were also putting millions into marketers. The World Cup happens every four years and has a huge following of viewers throughout Europe and South America. The event boasts millions of soccer fans.

So far the World Cup has over four decades of a reputation to build on. If the past is any indication the games are huge. Unfortunately due to a lack of international interest, the games have suffered. Though locals follow gaming adamantly, it seemed that the world lacked the same passion for soccer gaming…that is, until now. Bookies are excited because for the first time there was a large global interest in the World Cup games. It caused millions of viewers to put bets on who was going to win, what the spread would be and what the lineup of winners would be. Bookies everywhere are excited to take on the added stress of more business. This may be a sign that the World Cup is finally gaining the notoriety that it is worthy of. Expect next year to be even bigger. The World Cup seems to be following along the lines of many other big-name tournaments and events. It starts out slowly and then snowballs into a huge event for the gambling world to enjoy.

If you are a fan of soccer or the World Cup then look at where the event is going to be in another four years. Most likely there will be a whole new surge of global interest in the games. It has taken decades, but now the World Cup organizers can truly see the fruits of their passion and labors as the event moves into one of the most highly anticipated ones in the world.

Sports and Gambling Mix it UP

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Sports teams and gambling don’t mix—that is until now. In the past, sporting events and teams did their best to distance themselves from the world of gambling. If you look at any high-profile tournament in gambling you hardly would find big-name sponsors, much less mainstream ones. For years gambling flew under the radar of big sponsors. Even the WSOP, or World Series of Poker, was denied its sponsors and it is a huge poker tournament. Things have changed drastically in recent months.

Now the WNBA’s New York Liberty has signed an affiliation contract with Foxwoods Resort and Casino. This is the first time either have agreed to go public with a combined promotional effort. Outside of the US it is common for casinos and sports teams to promote events together but in the states, it has not been a common practice. The two entities have long tried to distance themselves from each other. Now, with the huge growth in gambling sports teams know that gambling is big business and want to capitalize on just how lucrative it really is. Estimates and industry experts have already noted the billions of potential dollars available when gambling is involved. The numbers are far too high for legislators to deny them…or sports teams, for that matter. It is causing the team owners to think twice about past decisions to stay away from gambling as a means of advertising and marketing. The change brings great news to all parties involved in the issue.

The Liberty recently held a game and displayed the Mohegan Sun Arena’s logo on their jerseys. It was a monumental moment in gaming because of the strategic affiliation. You can expect this to open the door to more promotions in the world of best online casino play in the future. Sports team owners know how many people they can reach with promoting casinos and are not going to deny the money. They are going to capitalize on the growing popularity of gambling in the market and take full advantage of the advertising possibilities. In the future more sports teams are going to move into the promotional possibilities that casino advertising offers them. It is a great move for all parties involved.

Sports Betting Rules Need Some Work

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

The world of onine gambling is taking hits these days from both sides. One side wants legalization of online gambling and the other side doesn’t. Each side has its own reasons as to why it wants things to pan out in its way and each side has some valid reasons as to why things should be their way. One aspect of gambling that is not as clear cut is the issue of sports betting. In recent years the UK has been getting stricter with gaming in an effort to make sure that it is handled legally and honestly with customers and the gaming websites. Some experts are citing that UK online casinos moving offshore would open up the possibiity of bringing sports betting back and that would open the door for more mismanagement of the hobby.

China is joining in on the debate over sports betting. This is another country that has issues regarding the wagering on sports issue. It too needs to put some safeguards and rules in order to protect online players. It is a difficult time as the country tries to manage its rules and regulations to bring in the millions of dollars available, without putting itscitizens and users in danger financially and emotionally. Recently China had its own problems with the world of fixing matches and corruption in football. The investigation that insued led to an arrest of twenty different sports officials, including the president and two team coaches. It was an embarassing time for the country and now it is trying to sort out issues. The people who were involved in the Chinese scandal were related to the UK club.

It’s this kind of problem that is going to make it hard for legislators to clean up sports betting in the indusry of gambling. Though it has always brought problems for legislators, it is going to be more complex as gambling continues to grow. The biggest problem it brings is how to keep everything legal. There will have to be watchdogs and safeguards built into the system that will police what happens. It will take time, but with the right debates and research, sports gambling will most likely be managed effectively.

Sports Betting Stays Legal in the US

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Gambling is big business in the world today. Whether it is poker, backgammon, baccarat, roulette or slots, people love handing out their money in the form of wagers and hoping for a return. One other aspect of gaming that has stood the test of time is fantasy sports. The fantasy sports industry is growing primarily due to the exposure that it receives from the sports leagues. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) that was signed into law in 2006 by President Bush has been written in such a way that fantasy sports remain legal. Other forms of gambling online that require financial transactions remain illegal according to the bill. A lot of experts question that move. They wonder how wagering on sports teams is different from wagering in other forms. It’s a small distinction between the two. It seems as if the only real difference is that the NFL is pushing hard for a continued ban on onine gambling with the exception for fantasy sports. It would be easy to assume that this would give the sports leagues one of the only legal forms of sports betting or online gambling within the United States. Could it be that leagues want that monopoly to capitalize on the money potential? Why else would they not want to share in the riches that gambling brings in?

The good news is that the UIGEA has been delayed once and it may disappear completely if Congress passes one of the gambling regulation bills that is due to be voted on. Individual states within the US have already taken steps to legalize online gambling, and some of these states are even moving toward legalizing sports betting. The regulation of the sports betting industry will deeply impact the fantasy sports industry. Yes, fans will continue to play fantasy sports but it is much more thrilling to actually bet on the outcome of a real game, and then watch it on television. The live result is what makes it so exciting and helps it to grow as a hobby. Only time will tell how the UIGEA or the sports betting world pan out, but one thing is for sure, it is going to remain a standard in the world of tomorrow.

When celebrities make a snafu, it sets afire an entire stream of media frenzy. It makes for an exciting time in the world though. Tiger Woods has yet to sort through his entire scandal or make his next appearance on the green. When he does, it will be interesting to see how many of the wagers on his every move are carried out and how people predict what he is going to do. Watch closely and see how accurate sports betters are and see how much money moves around in the market as a result of one man’s indiscretions.

Understanding Sportsbook Terms

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

The great thing about the internet is that it is quick to duplicate what happens in “real” casinos. The internet world took its format from the land-based casino and over the years has integrated almost everything offered at the local casino floor. When it comes to internet sportsbooks, they also have all of the same features as regular sportsbooks. Instead of calling in your bet to a bookie, you fill out an online form. In most cases, sportsbooks have the same deposit and withdrawal options as online casinos – some sportsbooks are in fact an extension of a full online casino. Internet sportsbooks have a variety of bets you can place. Here are some of the basics.

First of all there are parlay wagers. These are when you bet on the outcome of two or more selections as a combined bundle. The payoff on a parlay is higher than the payoff for wagering the selections separately. All selections in the parlay need to win for the parlay to win. A tie on an individual parlay selection brings the parlay down to the next lower parlay of the remaining action. This is one of the most common bets out there and can be highly useful when it comes to learning the basics of sportsbook betting.

Then there are the teaser wagers. Teasers are when you move the Side or Total by a selected number of points for all selections in the wager. For football you can tease for 6, 6, and 7 points; for basketball 4, 4, and 5 points. A teaser can have between 2 and 9 selections. The teaser is a winner if all the selections win against the teased line.

Finally, there are also the very popular Round Robins. These are when you have a series of parlay-type wagers.  These wagers are built from all possible groups of the specified round robin group size. The selections can be any combination of sides, over/under, money lines or puck lines. Currently, up to 9 teams can be grouped by either 2′s or 3′s. Each round robin series has the “Grouped By” number of teams in it and some series can win and other series loss. Each individual series is graded like a parlay. It may take some time to get the wagering system down but start slow. You’ll be able to test out your wagers and get the hang of it.
