Sports and Gambling Mix it UP

Sports teams and gambling don’t mix—that is until now. In the past, sporting events and teams did their best to distance themselves from the world of gambling. If you look at any high-profile tournament in gambling you hardly would find big-name sponsors, much less mainstream ones. For years gambling flew under the radar of big sponsors. Even the WSOP, or World Series of Poker, was denied its sponsors and it is a huge poker tournament. Things have changed drastically in recent months.

Now the WNBA’s New York Liberty has signed an affiliation contract with Foxwoods Resort and Casino. This is the first time either have agreed to go public with a combined promotional effort. Outside of the US it is common for casinos and sports teams to promote events together but in the states, it has not been a common practice. The two entities have long tried to distance themselves from each other. Now, with the huge growth in gambling sports teams know that gambling is big business and want to capitalize on just how lucrative it really is. Estimates and industry experts have already noted the billions of potential dollars available when gambling is involved. The numbers are far too high for legislators to deny them…or sports teams, for that matter. It is causing the team owners to think twice about past decisions to stay away from gambling as a means of advertising and marketing. The change brings great news to all parties involved in the issue.

The Liberty recently held a game and displayed the Mohegan Sun Arena’s logo on their jerseys. It was a monumental moment in gaming because of the strategic affiliation. You can expect this to open the door to more promotions in the world of best online casino play in the future. Sports team owners know how many people they can reach with promoting casinos and are not going to deny the money. They are going to capitalize on the growing popularity of gambling in the market and take full advantage of the advertising possibilities. French Soccer Team Upset with Noncompliance

The debates over gambling rules are not limited to the US. It seems that all over the world various business entities are debating whether or not the rules are being followed, how they should be followed and what changes need to be made. Olympique Lyonnais, a french soccer team is upset with the French national government for it’s continual failure to comply with the European Union regulations when it comes to online gambling. The Lyon team wants to accept online gambling sponsors but the French law continues to discriminate against foreign online gambling operators that are not licensed by the French government. French teams are concerned because they cannot accept advertising from any online gambling operators while their opponents from the UK and other European nations are sponsored by online sportsbooks and other prominent online gambling operators. This means that they are out of hundreds-of thousands of dollars- even millions in some cases. Sponsorship money is big bucks in the world and that includes sports wagering. If teams are not allowed to take advantage this could mean serious deficits in their own budgeting and problems with their own expenses.

As with anything in the world of gambling, there are opposing sides. One of their opponents, Real Madrid has wore shirts that bore the bWin brand. This sponsor has brought the team a lot of extra cash. This puts the French teams at a competitive disadvantage because they are unable to acquire the sponsors that help them purchase equipment, etc. “Olympique Lyonnais is now faced with the fact that we cannot display our sponsors logo this Wednesday in Madrid, in a country which legally allows this type of publicity, and during a match where the main competitor of BetClic will appear on the shirts of Real Madrid!” read a statement that was released by the Olympique Lyonnais team in France. New french regulations are being written but the legislators want to protect their gambling monopoly and continue to restrict foreign online gambling operators from accepting French players. Only time will tell what is going to happen, but with the millions of dollars at stake, there could be more and more pressure from both sides until a resolution is found.

How are Gamblers Dressing?

In olden days the high rollers at a table were easy to spot. They were dressed to the 9s in suits, hats and all the old-time finery. Now a days, things are different. There is a wide range of poker fashion. Here are some of the people you’ll see if you venture to a professional game:

First there is the “suit.” This group is still around. They follow along with tradition and live up to the stereotypical view of a high-rolling poker player. James Bond films like “Casino Royale” add to the mystique of this player. He is a multi-million dollar Texas oil-man. Real-life players who follow this type of fashion direction are Sammy Farha, Phil Ivey, Phil Gordon, and Howard Lederer. 

Then there is the casual poker player. These are the new group of players coming up. They include Peter Eastgate, Joe Cada– two people who are young and WSOP winners. Basically, this look consists of jeans, a t-shirt, and a backwards baseball cap. Most players who sport this attire are in their early 20’s, while a host of online poker players-turned live players love to dress like this too. An offshoot of this is the hooded-sweatshirt player. This style was popularized by Phil “The Unabomber” Laak; he is well known for pulling his hood over his head and tying the drawstrings. Now, plenty of other players are going with this look possibly as a way to conceal tells from opponents. Those who do this to conceal tells often wear sunglasses with their sweatshirt too.

Still another group of poker players are opting for sponsorship clothing. This is a great way to advertise themselves to the general public. Today, many casinos have their own branded wear. And one very popular way of spreading their brand is by having professional players wear their logos in televised tournaments. Of course some players go overboard with the logos, and have their clothes covered with a sponsor’s name. This phenomenon has given rise to a new look where sponsored players dedicate their attire to a certain poker room. Not only does this appear tacky, but it can also make one a target for opponents. Regardless of what type of “uniform” you decide to use when you are playing poker, remember that the basic of the game is that it’s supposed to be fun. Enjoy yourself and hopefully you can walk away with a win– regardless of what you are wearing.
