MA Still High on Hollywood Casino Opening

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Maryland is still on a high thanks to its Hollywood Casino opening. The casino brought in the thousands it was hoped to serve, and then some. Gamers from all over chose to get in on the fun and found that the slots at the casino were top notch and a lot of fun for them. There were even a few big winners since the opening of the casino in Perryville. So far crowds have continued to gather at the casino and wager. In just four days of initial operations the casino managed to bring in about $2 million. That is huge news for legislators who pushed for gambling to be brought in, and those who didn’t. Regardless of what side they were on, the change is a huge asset for the community. If this is a sign of what is to come, they could be sitting pretty on revenues of anywhere from $40 to $60 million per month, part of which would go directly to the state.

Part of their big draw was that people left the casino with great things to say. There were 1,500 slot machines for them to enjoy and on average, every slot handed out about $350. That is a huge return and most people who wagered for any length of time were able to win some money—a great feeling at any casino. The state’s legislators were ecstatic too. They know that the casino is going to be highly lucrative for them. Taking their tax revenue cut of a $40-$60 million revenue stream every month is no small change. That money is already being earmarked for various public works programs and education. The state was forced to cut back on education programs in the past and now can reinstitute them. This great news for residents who want more options for their children and anyone going back to further their education. If the state can continue to flourish with Hollywood Casino, it can eventually rebuild itslef and its market to what it was pre- recession, or even better. Overall this is one of the best action plans gambling has taken in the US market. Hopefully other states will see the same long-lasting success with their own gambling plans.

Owners of City Center Hopeful It will Turn Around Economy

Monday, December 7th, 2009

MGM Mirage CEO Jim Murren said, “I will promise you that next year will be better than this year. It’s going to be party central around here for a few weeks.”  Murren is talking about the new City Center casino complex that was introduced to the Las Vegas market last week. The complex opened its initial 1,500 hotel room. Overall the development is set to cost builders $8.5 billion.

Despite huge costs, the market is hoping that City Center will propel it back into a thriving economy. It’s no secret that over the past year and a half the recession has left Las Vegas in a disaster of its own. Though it once was the hub of gambling, many people were forced to cut back on their spending during the recession. That of course included gambling and vacations. Industry analysts Kevin Braiden of Bankrate.com said, “No one was spending what little cash they had on gambling! But Vegas casinos had the same expenses…with a huge decline in revenue.”

The city is also feeling the push regarding housing. The Las Vegas housing market is suffering huge numbers of foreclosures and default loans. The market is suffering greatly and jobs are difficult to find. The hopes that are resting on the shoulders of City Center’s success, are huge.

CityCenter is co-owned by the Las Vegas-based MGM Mirage and Dubai World, the investment arm of the Persian Gulf state. The facility is spread out over 67-acres and is located on The Strip. The Crystals retail shopping mall and the 392-room Mandarin Oriental opened this past week. The Aria Resort and Casino is set to open next week. It will be a premiere gaming facility for gamblers worldwide to enjoy. It will bring an additional 4,000 hotel rooms to the Las Vegas market.  The facility is huge and is expected to spur the economy into growth. Owners are hoping it will bring gamblers into its doors because of its vastness and premiere gaming, shopping, recreation, spa and golfing area. “Of all the wonderful Las Vegas properties with which I’ve been associated, CityCenter is simply the most amazing,” said Kirk Kerkorian, who owns a 37 percent stake in MGM. “I’m extremely excited to see the public’s reaction and look forward to seeing how it changes Las Vegas.”

Greenbrier Resort Opens Taver Casino

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

After not even one month of holding a gambling license the Greenbrier Resort has opened its Tavern Casino. The facility is an on-site gambling arena for guests to enjoy blackjack, three-card poker and roulette, among various other casino table games. The 3,700-square-foot Tavern Casino is open to overnight guests, members of The Greenbrier Sporting Club and The Greenbrier Golf and Tennis Club, in addition to registered event and convention attendees who are staying off-property when more than 400 rooms at Greenbrier are sold. The Tavern Casino is open Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 a.m. and Sundays 2 p.m.-3 a.m. Later on this month, visitors will be allowed to enjoy slot machines. In addition a full-scale casino is scheduled to open in April of 2010. The casino will offer about 40 different tables games and over 300 slot machines. Through December 22nd the Greenbrier is offering a great deal for anyone who visits. There is a Tavern Casino package that includes accommodations, $150 in match play coupons to be used for table games, and breakfast for two.

The Greenbrier promotion is a just one of many promotions gamblers from across the country can expect in coming months. As the legalization and regulation of gambling looms nearer, more and more casinos will be taking advantage of lax laws and extend their bonuses and promotions more readily to gamers. In addition, more slots parlors will be looking to expand their businesses into the table game market.  Part of the impetus is that a lot of businesses used slots games as a test market. They decided to start with slots and then “see how things go.” Now that they know the huge revenues that slots bring in, they are looking to bring in various table games and expansion games to their slots floor.

A recent study showed that slots make up about 60% of a casino’s overall revenues. That’s huge amount and while many people believed that poker and other more “high profile” games were more lucrative, studies have showed otherwise. Slots remain staples in the world of an online and land-based gambler and are showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.
