MA Still High on Hollywood Casino Opening

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Maryland is still on a high thanks to its Hollywood Casino opening. The casino brought in the thousands it was hoped to serve, and then some. Gamers from all over chose to get in on the fun and found that the slots at the casino were top notch and a lot of fun for them. There were even a few big winners since the opening of the casino in Perryville. So far crowds have continued to gather at the casino and wager. In just four days of initial operations the casino managed to bring in about $2 million. That is huge news for legislators who pushed for gambling to be brought in, and those who didn’t. Regardless of what side they were on, the change is a huge asset for the community. If this is a sign of what is to come, they could be sitting pretty on revenues of anywhere from $40 to $60 million per month, part of which would go directly to the state.

Part of their big draw was that people left the casino with great things to say. There were 1,500 slot machines for them to enjoy and on average, every slot handed out about $350. That is a huge return and most people who wagered for any length of time were able to win some money—a great feeling at any casino. The state’s legislators were ecstatic too. They know that the casino is going to be highly lucrative for them. Taking their tax revenue cut of a $40-$60 million revenue stream every month is no small change. That money is already being earmarked for various public works programs and education. The state was forced to cut back on education programs in the past and now can reinstitute them. This great news for residents who want more options for their children and anyone going back to further their education. If the state can continue to flourish with Hollywood Casino, it can eventually rebuild itslef and its market to what it was pre- recession, or even better. Overall this is one of the best action plans gambling has taken in the US market. Hopefully other states will see the same long-lasting success with their own gambling plans.

Maryland Excited about New Hollywood Casino

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Maryland is making a big splash in the market with its new Hollywood Casino. The casino opened a few weeks ago and already it has a good fan base. It seems that thousands of customers have already ventured to the casino in search of some great gambling fun. Prior to its opening residents of the state had to drive to Delaware Park in Wilmington—it was the closest casino in the area for Perryville residents to find gaming. The Hollywood Casino now is offering premiere gambling to the area and people love it. If you are a fan of gambling and live in the state, no doubt you have at least heard about the wagering going on at this new location. The casino has been a long time in coming. Talks of it began years ago and no one was sure that it would end up being a reality to the people in the state. Of course slots gaming offers millions of dollars in revenue via taxes to any state that brings them in, but that doesn’t mean that every state is opting for them. In fact, some states are looking to keep gambling out altogether.

Maryland is not one of them though. The state has long been pining for the slots parlor called Hollywood Casino. They know the benefits—not only in tax revenue dollars, but also in job creation. Both combine and bring an added benefit to the communities there. One thing that legislators were concerned with also was gamblers who were taking money out of the city. With highly competitive neighboring communities, residents who don’t find gambling in their own borders are going to venture to other counties to wager. This fuels money out of the local economies. Legislators did not want that to happen so they pushed forward with the gambling in Perryville. Now Hollywood Casino is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the area. On its first three days of operation, Hollywood Casino brought in over 21,000 patrons. Since that first day the casino has brought in a steady stream of patrons too. That is great news for legislators and casino operators alike.

Maryland Excited about New Hollywood Casino

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Maryland legislators have some great news to start off October with. The state has long been pining for gambling laws that bring in millions of tax revenue dollars. They know that the amount of money available via gambling is startling and could bring the economy out of the financial slump it has been in since the recession. The recession was a difficult time for every state. With dollars seriously pulled back, it was hard for states to find ways of bringing in the revenue needed to manage their budgets. The recession left state legislators to deal with huge deficits. With few options, legislators were left to manage with cutbacks. Many programs were put on hold with no option to bring them back to the market. The only viable option was to find some way of bringing in millions needed and the most viable option is to legalize and regulate gambling.

Maryland asked its residents if they were ready for gambling about two years ago and people via a vote, said yes. They were ready for some big casinos to be built in the market and since that time have been seriously searching for gambling options. Though they traveled out of state to neighboring casinos for their gambling needs, many voiced their desire to have a local gaming center. The reason was because they felt that Maryland needed to take advantage of the money and jobs that a good gaming casino could bring. Now that is happening because Hollywood Casino just opened. It opened to great reviews and a long line of patrons. Though it ended up opening early, that did little to deter anyone from coming in for gaming. So far the casino operators have noted the successful revenue stream and are hoping that it continues. If the past week is any sign, then most likely it is going to keep up with the demand. The state is ready to accept the millions in tax revenue dollars and already has benefited from a good amount of revenue. It shouldn’t take long for a consistent market to come to the casino and build up its reputation as a leading gaming facility in the state.

Penn National Funds Hollywood Casino

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Residents of the state of Maryland have been patient for gambling within the state. They have heard rumblings for a long time now that promised a full-service casino but were kept in the dark about details. Now that is all about to change. Penn National Gaming Company just announced that a new casino is opening in Perryville. The casino is going to hold 1,500 new slot machines and a slew of table games for patrons to enjoy. Part of the huge draw of the casino is the sheer number of slots. A 1,500-machine casino is big news in any market. Remember the casino slots games are some of the most popular in the market of gambling. Though other games may be higher priced, slots are the games that have traditionally performed the most consistently. A poker game may bring in a grand total of $10,000 twice throughout any given day. A good slot machine can bring in $10,000 an hour consistently from twelve midnight to twelve midnight the following day. It is easy to see that though poker has a bigger one-time hit, slots are still the consistent winners of the gambling race.

Now Penn National Gaming Company is bringing in the Hollywood Casino and hoping to dazzle residents with the game offerings. Operators are hoping that not only residents visit, but also residents of neighboring states come into the opening month of operations for the casino. They are trying to build the best casino possible. Not only do they want customers, but they also want to make sure that they last in the market. The world of gambling is highly competitive these days and one casino that lacks will quickly be replaced by another casino that doesn’t. Of course Penn National Gaming is an expert in the market of building casinos so most likely even a discerning gambler is going to find their time well spent at this casino. Penn National is also moving in on another possible casino in the state. They are currently in development with MI Developments, Inc. to work on the Maryland Jockey Club. It is up to voters to decide whether or not this project should move forward or be scrapped. They will find out what the decision is in November after residents vote tallies are in.

Pop Culture Finds its Way into Gambling

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The interesting thing about online gaming today is that pop culture is playing a big part in it. Over the years pop culture has developed into a true pastime for millions of people. Just look at the growth of Hollywood websites that report sightings of actors, actresses and musicians in various locations throughout the world. At a premiere or big concert you will see paparazzi there to chronicle the event and get great pictures of the stars. The next thing you know those stars are up there on the front pages of magazines. People in today’s culture buy these magazines and pay top-dollar to see their favorite stars. It is a star’s market these days and if you are famous, you expect to be on covers everywhere when you make an appearance—scheduled or not.

Because of the growth of pop culture many games are taking their cues. If you go to a casino these days you can find games with a wide variety of themes. If you like NASCAR and horses or shopping and jazz music, you can find a slots game that is built around it. Your interest is somewhere in a casino and it will just take some looking to find it. Casino operators know that gamers are more likely to play on games that attract them in every way—payout, wager, style and theme. They work these four elements together carefully to bring in the biggest number of gamers possible to their casino. For example, right now there is a great debate over The Hulk—of course the Hulk is that green character that Bruce Banner turns into when provoked. In the past Edward Norton took the helm of creating the character but the new franchise is looking for its next star to take his place. So what does that have to do with gambling? Well, casinos are taking bets as to who is going to fill Norton’s shoes. There are some forerunners, but no formal decision has been made. This is a testament to how much pop culture has made its way into gaming and how it affects the games that operators create.

Here is a New Poker Record to Marvel At

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Carlos Mortensen is the only player to ever win the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event and the World Poker Tour (WPT) Championship event, two WSOP bracelets, multiple WPT titles and over $9 million in tournament winnings. This Wednesday watch out for Mortensen at the WPT Hollywood Poker Open at the Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The win is a landmark for Mortensen for a couple of reasons. First, it marks his third career WPT title, tying him with Gus Hansen for the most WPT wins by an individual. Secondly, his $393,820 victory pushes him past Daniel Negreanu on the all-time WPT money earners list. With over $5.75 million in WPT winnings to his credit, Mortensen is now the top earner in the tour’s history. In the Indiana game Mortensen found himself with Jerry Payne, Ravi Raghavan and Chris Bell who were eliminated in 6th, 5th and 4th places respectively. Bell’s elimination at the hands of Mortensen set up 3-handed play between The Matador, Frank Calo and Mike Mustafa. The three players were virtually dead even in chips to begin with and the stacks fluctuated as the trio, no longer handcuffed by the short-stacked players at the table, splashed around in more pots.

Mustafa fought hard, but to no avail. It took a cooler of a hand, in which Mustafa flopped top two and Mortensen flopped a straight, to get the money in the middle. Mustafa was unable to fill up, so Mortensen raked the pot and took a substantial chip lead. He would ride that lead to victory. On the final hand of play, Mortensen’s KT outraced Mustafa’s pocket sixes and the match was over. It was great fun to watch and any poker lover should enjoy seeing the games play out. Taking part in them is also a fun time if you can get a spot to test your own luck in the gaming arena. So far though, here are the final table results from the Hollywood Poker Open:

1st Place: Carlos Mortensen – $393,820
2nd Place: Mike Mustafa – $223,623
3rd Place: Frank Calo – $167,717
4th Place: Chris Bell – $124,966
5th Place: Ravi Raghavan – $105,234
6th Place: Jerry Payne – $88,791

Hollywood Cares about Legalizing Gambling

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

It seems that Hollywood cares about legalizing gambling. The motion picture and TV industries are watching closely what is going on in Congress. The issue of legalizing and regulating gambling is becoming more and more of an indicator as to where movies can go for their next big monetary breaks. Many top casinos would love to capitalize on their big name brands and have them translated into online games. If regulations allow those games to be legalized, then most likely there will be millions of dollars for movie studios to move in on. Movies like Rambo, Top Gun and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider have already been moves to the world of online gaming. They have taken the form of popular and lucrative slot machines that have seem millions of players vy for their substantial payouts. Also, you’ll find branded movie slots in many of the top casinos in Las Vegas. Branded video slots tend to be much more popular than traditional video slots that center around a frequently overused theme.

With the opening of the US market to all of the top online casinos with multi-million dollar development budgets, the movie studios hope that some of this money will be spent to acquire the licensing for some of the top motion pictures in box office history, and to hire the movie studios to develop short films that can be used in video slots that feature movies. If they can be paid a fee per use of the clips, that could meand millions of dollars every month for them. The bottom line is that movies are pastimes of millions of people all over the globe. If every one starts playing movie-licensed slots games, then the revenue potentials are endless. A regulated online gambling industry within the US is great for the players, but it also helps the government by providing additional tax revenue for government projects, and it helps the economy by bring in additional ad dollars as well as US licensing agreements to the market. There is a lot of money to be had with legalizing and regulating online gaming and it seems as if everyone wants a piece of the pie.

Hollywood Casino at Penn National Regains Licensing

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course can continue operations. The casino just went through the relicensing process it needed from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. The casino is required to go through a yearly hearing to maintain its operating license. Several casino officials, including John Finamore, senior vice president of parent company Penn National Gaming Inc., and Hollywood general manager Frank Quigley, spoke about the casino positively. They assured the board that the casino will be a beneficial move for the community. They cite the creation of more than 1,000 jobs as one of the biggest bonuses of the move. In the end it was the testimony of Michael Rosenberry of the Gaming Board’s bureau of investigations and enforcement that seemed to ensure the casino’s reapproval. Rosenberry was key to conducting an intensive and thorough back background investigation and since it came back clean, he stated that there is no reason “to decline the casino’s relicensing for the 2010 year.”

The only negative incident came from State Police Capt. Timothy Allue, director of gaming enforcement, who said there were 440 investigations of criminal activity at the casino so far this year. Of those investigations, Allue stated that 286 of those were theft probes — most involving slot machine voucher coupons — and of that number 248 were resolved on the gaming floor. “A large number of those were cases of a person keeping a voucher that a previous patron forgot to cash out or left in the machine”, he said. He also confirmed that given the number of people who visit the casino each year, 440 crimes of this nature “is not a figure I’m alarmed with.” In his testimony, Quigley said the casino projects revenue of $236.8 million for 2009 and will return more than $80 million to the state in property tax relief and $14.7 million to local and county governments

Overall everyone is looking at the relicensing as a positive move for the community and hoping the job creation aspect of the issue will truly bring a change to the market. Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course is one of the biggest assets the community has and they want to take full advantage of all that it can do for residents in the area.
