What is an Overbet in Poker Play?
Saturday, March 27th, 2010When it comes to poker play, there are quite a few strategies out there. You may need to test a few to see which ones work for you, but there are a wide variety of options to choose from. One move you will come in contact with if you continue to play poker is the overbet. An overbet is usually defined as a bet that is greater than the size of the pot. A river overbet for value happens in cash games more frequently than in tournaments, as stacks are commonly deeper and there’s no fear of losing your tournament life.
If you have heard of the overbet lately, you can attribute most of its popularity to player Tom Dwan. He’s used the move successfully over the years in tournaments like High Stakes Poker. The value of the move is that overbetting the river for value won’t be profitable at $0.25/$0.50, it’s just that it needs to be used against the right opponents and in favourable situations. Overbetting the river against a calling station, or an opponent who has gone into check-call mode is a good spot. Likewise when you’re confident your opponent holds a very strong but second-best hand such as, say, the nut full house against a worse full house, then overbetting the river is genius as it’s almost impossible to fold. Also, to some opponents overbetting the river looks far more bluffy than simply betting half or two-thirds of the pot. And, of course, opponents don’t have to call this overbet very often to make it more profitable than just betting half the pot for value. Overbetting can take courage though. When you have a great hand you naturally want to play it right away. Take your time and act wisely when it comes to making your next move. Remember that there are the free-play poker tournaments for just this purpose. You can take new strategies that you aren’t familiar with and apply your new move. It’s a great way to learn about the techniques and still cut back on the risk involved in each play. Test out the overbet and see if it works for you– also, watch Dwan as he uses it and see how this skilled player has learned to strategize to his own benefit and win big.
