Sam Houston Continues Slots Plan- Part 2

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Another part of the problems for Sam Houston Race Park is in the form of competing race tracks in neighboring states. There was a time when Sam Houston was able to bring the biggest races to the market. The company was the main one providing the big-dollar events with huge payouts. Since the recession, that has changed dramatically. Now it is the race tracks in neighboring states that are holding the huge events. They are able to bring big competing races with bigger horsemen and better known horses, along with bigger purses. This makes their race tracks direct competitors to a race track that is already suffering. Plus add to the mix various other options for wagering, and it is creating a disastrous market for the big name race track to deal with. Gambling companies are coming into the mix left and right—they are focused on bringing more races that attract even bigger numbers of gamers.

The owner of Sam Houston is Shawn Hurwitz. Hurwitz has voiced his concerns regarding growth and the future of the track over the past few months. He notes the growing competition and how it is pushing Sam Houston out of the mix. He also added that there is new hope on the horizon despite the bad news. Penn National Gaming is a huge gaming company that just purchased half of the race track. Hurwitz is hoping that going fifty-fifty in on the project, will help the two companies to put together a viable gaming plan that will allow for a new revival of the gaming market. Another goal of the changes is to bring more jobs to the state and reviving the race track will be a sure fire way to do this. In fact, if the two companies are able to spur on the market, they should be able to bring hundreds of new jobs to the locals and this alone would help the economy and the state’s financial condition. Only time will tell what is going to happen with the race track, but Penn National and Hurwitz have made it clear that they are not going down without a fight. They are hoping to make considerable changes that cause the race track to return to its older days of glory.

Sam Houston Continues Slots Plan- Part 1

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

The racing industry in Texas has been suffering. Of course all race tracks have had diminished numbers since the recession. One thing that people don’t have to do is wager. Though they can cut back on other things, gambling is one thing in the world that they don’t have to do. It can be completely eliminated from anyone’s budget. That is part of the problem with gambling—no one needs to do it. Gambling companies have been suffering due to that and have few options other than pushing promotions and deals harder. This costs though. Just ask the operators in Atlantic City—they have been struggling to spur on the market for months now. More and more people have been laid off in an effort to save businesses, and that doesn’t seem to be bringing the results that the operators were hoping for. Now Texas is having the same lag in numbers that Atlantic City has had with overall gambling.

Texas is a state that had a lucrative race track market at one time. It used to be one of the favorite pastimes of the residents in the area. They believed that racing was a great gambling option and it benefited race tracks substantially. One large race track in the area is Sam Houston Race Park. It is one of the biggest locations for racing in the state and has a reputation for greatness. Since the recession though, people have been leaving the racing tracks alone. They have been too busy paying bills and getting through their daily finances to think of playing at a race track. Sam Houston’s owners are trying to come up with ways of moving back into the market and bring in the same numbers it did pre-recession. The biggest obstacle to overcome is changing people’s perceptions of wagering and getting them to once again return to race tracks for wagers. Remember too that the race track still has the competition of other casinos in the state and online gambling companies. Now that the online gambling market has increased so much and so quickly, it is making things for the racing industry even harder.

Part two coming next.

Penn National Continues Expansion

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

In the world of gambling there are many different companies that are making names for themselves. Penn National Gaming is a company that has expanded into numerous locations. Included in those locations are Florida, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Ontario and West Virginia to name a few. The company is one of the biggest gaming companies in the world and is showing no signs of slowing down in terms of growth. Remember that the gambling market is moving quickly. It is estimated that there are thousands of new gamers entering the market any given month and that translates into millions of dollars. In all the locations Penn National Gaming operates, it has over 27,000 slots and 500 table games. Of note are the huge variation in slots games and those are the ones that the company is becoming an expert in. The company knows how popular slots are and that is taking its numbers to the heights of popularity.

One of the biggest accomplishments of the company is the opening of a new casino in Maryland. The slots parlor that was opened has already shown huge numbers and is not slowing down. The casino is in Perryville and it is attracting more customers that it had normally anticipated. Experts calculated a few million dollars in revenue for the first four weeks of operations. Instead, the facility brought in $2 million in the first four days of operations. It was a sign of how popular gambling is but also how good Penn National is at building new gambling facilities. Expect good things from the company in the future and when it comes to opening new facilities, expect Penn National to take the helm at more projects. The company knows how to develop and build casinos and more states in the US are going to hire them to take charge of their own gambling expansion projects. They want the best possible chances of building a lucrative gambling facility and using a premier company that has done it time and time again is one of the easiest ways to do so. Penn National Gaming is going to continue with growth as the market continues to expand.

Virtual Casinos Taking Over Market

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

The world of gambling is moving to the online market. There was a time when gambling was a land based activity only. If you wanted to wager, then you had to go to a big casino. It could have been hours away, but gamers from all over would travel to the big casinos for a great gaming experience. Things are quickly changing though with technology advancing. First of all, online gambling companies are working overtime to replicate what you see in a land based casino. Developers were well aware of who their competition was and their main goal was to bring the land based casino feel to the world of online gaming. They did a great job though—just look at the casinos of today. A few decades ago you could go online and play games here and there, but nothing like what you are going to experience today. In today’s market, games are as far advanced as anything you are going to find in a land based casino. The best thing about gaming companies is that they are working solely with technology and don’t have to worry about the same things that land based casinos have to worry about. Consider that to open an online gambling casino you have to start with regulations, then get licensing, then find a developer, then budget for construction, promotion, advertising, staffing, utilities, maintenance, leasing, etc. There is a long list of things that gaming companies for land based casinos have to concern themselves with to get the ball rolling. On the other hand, there are virtual casinos.

With a virtual casino, they have to work on licensing, development and then programming, with some advertising and promotion. Cutting out the costs of management and a physical location’s financial strain is a big deal to the market. Online gambling companies forgo all of those expenses and can focus on the games. This is what is going to bring them money and this is what is wooing their customer base away from traveling to land based casinos. Overall online gambling is growing exponentially in the market because of the advances it is making. Add to that the convenience of wagering from the comforts of home and no one can turn down online gambling.

Nova Scotia Gaming Co. Conducts Survey

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Canada is a country that has been toying with various online gambling options in the recent past. The various provinces have played with different laws in the hopes of making money. Some have already delved into the world of gambling and others are testing the waters slowly. Overall everyone knows that gambling is one of the most lucrative markets right now and is expected to grow exponentially in the market in coming months. in particular the world of online gambling is seeing a surge in growth. No one can beat the flexibility and convenience of wagering online—you don’t even have to leave your home to have access to some of the best games in the market and the biggest payouts. One province that has taken on gambling as a legal activity is Nova Scotia. The province allows gambling and has seen some success with their legislation, but now lawmakers are rethinking their involvement with the activity of gambling and online gaming.

As of right now, Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation is conducting a study that will show what the true benefits and detriments of gambling are. Though there are some good gambling dollars coming in, there has not yet been a formal study to show if the money truly is enough to keep the market going with the activity. This study is going to prove once and for all what the situation is and allow lawmakers to make educated changes in what they want to do with gambling in the future. As of right now, the province is putting gambling on hold and reassessing the market. this is to the dismay of gamers who already have caught the gambling bug, but they are going to have to wait and see what this formal study is going to show. It could be that the returns on having gambling is enough for legislators to continue with their plan and bring in money. It also could be that legislators eliminate the lottery and gambling from the province. This would cut back on the revenue dollars, but it also would cut back on problems the study uncovers within the market.

New Bill Would Change UIGEA

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Legislators are working with gambling laws in the US. There are many people who want to change things, but the problem is big. So far the UIGEA still stands and that bans banks from processing transactions that deal with gambling. The biggest problem is that banks are tasked with flagging and monitoring gambling activities. Legislators are around who want to change the laws, but they are having a difficult time pushing through bills to amend the UIGEA. So far there are a few key players in the fight, but their goals are to do more than to discuss possibilities. The overall goal is to bring a new bill into the mix or at minimum amend the UIGEA. This new configuration of the bill would allow for gaming companies to operate legally. In turn, they would have access to the millions in tax revenue dollars available. Gamblers were unable to wager in the states and so they moved to offshore companies, taking their millions of gambling dollars with them. Legislators look back at that time and realize how much they lost in terms of revenue and how it is unrecoverable at this time. Still—some are pushing for changes that will take advantage of the tax revenue dollars coming in via gambling.

The changes aren’t coming as quickly as hoped for though. Legislators are pushing for a passing of a new bill that would change the laws, but the timeline is not as hasty as wanted. If the issue isn’t sorted out in the near future, it seems that it may be shelved for another two years. That is two year’s worth of gambling dollars that would be fueled out of the country. Gambling is a billion dollar business and is expected to more than double in worth in the next four years, so that leaves the US as a loss of billions. If something isn’t finished soon, this is going to be the outcome and legislators will lose the advantage of millions of tax revenue dollars. Post recession, this is not a good time to pass up the money. It would do a lot for turning the market around that much quicker.

Gambling Continues to Push Into Mainstream

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

There was a time when gambling was considered to be an underground activity. If you go back to the 1940s, you would see the stereotypical gamblers rushing around casinos. Mobsters and entertainers made up that stereotype. They were the high rollers who clogged the poker tables. This is what made up the perception of gambling for a long time but then things began changing. Suddenly more and more casual and friendly games began croping up in the market. This changed the overall feeling for gaming and people started wanting to join in on the fun. Suddenly land based casinos started getting more customers who were more “everyday”. They brought some prices down and varied the wager requirements for games. This brought a new popularity to the games and opened the door for a bigger customer base. Things like the World Series of Poker were born too in the 1970s. This was a huge change for the gaming public. Suddenly as the poker games gained more players, it created more tournaments in the world. These are all examples of how gambling has been growing in popularity and widening its market.

If you look at the average gamer now, the sterotype is totally obliterated. No longer is there a slim demographic to promote to. With the rise in internet gambling now there is even a bigger market to play with. Gambling companies are building big promotions that span all bankrolls too. If you have a limited bankroll you can still find casinos that offer the big payouts to you. Some casinos are even free so it won’t cost you anything to join in on the fun. The risk is virtually gone as you wager but still have an opportunity to win cash prizes. The way the gaming companies are opening up the market can be seen too with the movement of mainstream advertisers into big tournaments. Now it is common to see mainstream advertisers posting their brands at the WSOP. This was formerly unheard of. As the market continues to expand and more states legalize gambling, expec the market to continue to blow up and welcome more players. It is an exciting time in gambling and gamers are on the cusp of innovations and fun with the online market.

Secure Money Inc. Under Investigation

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Though many states in the US are pushing for gambling changes, there are still some that are holding out. Washington for example is a state that is banning online gambling. Though there are millions of tax revenue dollars to be had with a good gambling plan, the state’s legislators don’t believe that is enough to legalize gaming. This is a move that has been long coming. People are wondering whether or not they can wager for a while now. The answer is no and the state is sending a tough message to those who don’t heed it. Secure Money Inc. is a company based out of Las Vegas and it issued about $2.7 million in checks to various customers over an eight-month long period of time. The company now is being prosecuted for the infraction within the state by legislators. The company also allowed seven people within the state to receive these funds under the heading of “payroll checks.” Overall the activities were considered to be illegal and the company is now under scrutiny by investigators cracking down on gambling issues. The government seized over a half-million dollars worth of revenues as a result of the investigation.

This is just another example of the issues that gambling brings with it. Many anti-gambling activists believe that the cost to have gambling in their state is too hefty to support. For example, though gambling may being in $2 million in tax revenue dollars per month, if the number of addictions and criminal activity incidents increases substantially, a good portion of that could have to go to shoring up resources for issues. For example, if the police force has to be strengthened to manage a growth in illegal activities, that could eat up a huge portion of that additional $2 million in revenue. If ten-thousand new gambling addicts enter the market they are going to need additional resource centers to help them with their disease. This too could end up costing the government more money per month than it is bringing in via gambling revenue. Only time will tell what is going to happen with the market, but overall the Washington market is not ready for gambling and is fighting hard to keep it out of the state .

BK Advertising Comes Under Fire

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

One of the problems with online gambling is anti-gambling activists claim that it could endanger underage people. The legal gambling age in British Columbia for example is 18 and over. Though this is the case, the country has run ads on television that seem to target a much younger audience. Traditionally, if you want to see what demographic a company is seeking out, all you have to do is look at their commercial campaigns. You can see what market they want attract. For example, you won’t see a baby stroller product being advertised with senior citizens as main characters. You also won’t see a mini-van with college-aged students involved as main characters. Rather, minivans are promoted to mothers and fathers; while, baby strollers are promoted to late-twenty to thirty-year old consumers. Marketing is a huge element of any business’ success these days and companies put millions into marketing research. They want to know how to best reach the demographic they want buying their products and the demographic they can easily create value for. Unfortunately in British Columbia the rules were skewed a bit as gaming companies directed commercials that seemed targeted for people too young. Experts are warning that this could encourage young people to start wagering illegally, and in turn hurt them.

It was the BK Lottery Corporation that was running the ads and making the lottery highly attractive to the young market. One expert equated the ads to promoting smoking to underage teenagers. If gaming companies are going to be allowed to advertise in the mainstream, then they are going to have to be responsible and BK legislators are hoping to make that a ruling. Right now the incident was a sign of how things are changing and how aggressive promotion is getting these days. The world of gambling is highly competitive and that is pushing companies to do whatever they can to garner more customers. Though this is a necessity with any strong and growing business, it could also be taken overboard and hurt the public. Legislators are taking the criticism and are now looking into their own involvement with gaming companies and their advertising plans.
