How Professional Poker Careers are Shaping Up

In the world of casino gambling you are seeing a wider variety of players who list ‘poker professional’ as their vocation. Just look at anyone who won a table at the WSOP or any other big poker tournament—most likely they soon are working their way to being a professional gamer. Many left their day jobs in pursuit of the big dollars that poker gambling can bring them. Imagine that the average US worker makes $50,000 out of college with a Master’s Degree. Then consider that a winner of a smaller table at the WSOP, World Series of Poker, can win a few hundred-thousand dollars in just one sitting! Which one would you prefer? The answer of course is simple. Players put their hopes on winning a few big tournaments. Even if they build just a few games per year, if those games pay out $50K or more, they can reasonably sustain themselves on that alone. It is a great benefit for any good gamer to get into. But how rushed should you be to change jobs for gambling?

The answer is, take your time. Remember the old adage, “If it was that easy, everyone would be doing it”? This applies here. If winning tables at the WSOP were that simple, then people everywhere would be jumping at the chance to participate. There is a reason why winners are so heralded—they are unique. Consider that there are hundreds of satellite tournaments for a big game like the WSOP. That means that anyone who even gets to the actual WSOP has played hands and hands against tens of other players around the world. They had to work their ways up to that level of being able to participate in the games for the big win. Like every other career, professional poker player takes time and practice. If you are setting your sights on being a poker player for a living, then get some experience with the games. Keep on bringing more and more to the table as a player, and then you can see the benefits of your hard work. It is only until after you formulate a good strategy and have experience under your belt that you are going to see enough results to potentially make it a career. Even if you are a great player though remember that Lady Luck plays a huge part in whether or not you win or lose.
