Recall when it was ridiculous to play poker for a living? There were days when anyone who told you they played poker to pay the bills was laughed at. “Get a real job!” people told them. A few decades ago no doubt that is what anyone who made the announcement received—ridicule and laughter. Now things are much different. In today’s market, more and more gamers are making gambling a legitimate career choice. Namely it is the high-stakes poker players who are coming into the market as true professionals. Some Ivy-league schools are even offering “poker” as a course for students to take. The reasoning is that it offers skills that can be “learned and taught” and those skills can be translated into the business market. How realistic is it to use poker skill for business? Now, over thirty years later it has thousands of players vying for the cash payouts of the games and the coveted WSOP bracelet. It is the payouts though that are pushing more and more young hopefuls into the game of poker as a profession. Consider that if you win one game in the WSOP you could be walking away with well over a million dollars. Do that once a year and then play a few other tournaments and you will be find financially. This is becoming more and more popular with young gamers who see the huge payouts and want in. Expect the market to expand and more professional players to come into the gaming market. The game is welcoming millions of new players every year and that is driving its popularity up that much quicker.
